Charles Lucas Makio is a dynamic Kenyan Marine Resources Manager and Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) currently pursuing a PhD at Atlantic Technological University in Ireland. His doctoral research investigates the flux of buried sedimentary carbon in marine coastal waters following extreme weather events and dredging activities.

Charles holds an inter-university MSc in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management with distinction (Cum laude) from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Universiteit Gent, and Universiteit Antwerpen in Belgium. His academic foundation is further supported by a BSc in Marine Resource Management (Second Class Honours, Upper Division) from the Technical University of Mombasa in Kenya.

With extensive international experience, Charles has served in various technical and leadership capacities:

  • Fisheries Management: Currently serves as a Fisheries Manager for the Bahari Hai Organization in Kenya, where he coordinates fieldwork and devises data collection techniques for catch data insights.
  • Geospatial Expertise: Previously worked with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Paris, supporting geospatial technology projects and the development of the World Heritage Online Maps Platform (WHOMP).
  • Data Science: Provided oceanographic data interpretation for Nine North, Inc. in support of software development for the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
  • Conservation Biology: Served as a data analyst and advisor for Local Ocean Conservation, overseeing sea turtle research and implementing relational databases and real-time visualization dashboards.

Charles is a proficient researcher with hands-on experience in at-sea sampling across various global regions, including the Arctic (Greenland), the Western Indian Ocean, and the North Atlantic. He is highly skilled in R, Python, SQL, and GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS) for environmental data mining and analysis. A certified SCUBA diver and published author, his research interests include benthic ecology, migratory species conservation, and long-term carbon storage.
