Dr Róisín Nash is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and a Principal Investigator with the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre. She holds a PhD in Marine Zoology from the University of Galway and has over 20 years of experience in marine ecology, aquatic pollution, and environmental sustainability.
Her research focuses on the interactions between human pressures and aquatic ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on microplastics in marine and freshwater environments. Her work has contributed to shaping the field of microplastics research, including highly cited studies on standardising definitions, monitoring approaches, and analytical methods across environmental media. She adopts a systems-based perspective, examining how microplastics interact with sediments, water, and species such as Nephrops norvegicus, positioning pollution within wider ecological processes and ecosystem health.
Róisín’s research has strong policy relevance and international impact. She maintains an established collaborative research profile, contributing to national and EU-funded projects that inform environmental policy and management in Ireland. Her work is reflected in the development of technical and advisory reports that support evidence-based regulation, monitoring frameworks, and strategic decision-making in aquatic environmental protection. Her work aligns with and informs initiatives under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and broader sustainability agendas, particularly the UN Sustainable Development Goal on Life Below Water.
Dr Nash’s research approach is collaborative and interdisciplinary, increasingly focused on applied and solution-oriented outcomes.
