Abstract
The use of algae biomass has been increasingly discussed as a potential renewable source of biomass for bioenergy applications. However, limitations encountered in the biomass supply chain (ie, the algae biomass cultivation and harvesting stages) have hindered the progress of large scale production of this biomass essential to meet energy goals. This chapter highlights the main considerations involved in the production and supply of algae (micro- and macroalgae), summarises the current economic and environmental implications of this biomass use, and identifies schemes which can be used to improve its future use for bioenergy.
