Abstract

Recent outages in the AWS us-east-1 region lasting 5 and 8 hours respectively have impacted applications such as Slack, IMDb and McDonalds, architecting cloud applications to be highly available will limit the impact of regional outages in the future. This paper presents early research into an approach for architecting applications, along with the associated DevOps processes, to minimize disruptions to a system. The approach includes specific consideration for multi-region, multi-cloud architecture.
