Abstract

Nanometric fibers made from bioactive glasses constitute one of the latest developments in the field of materials for biomedical applications. Bioactive glasses constitute a group of biomaterials that are highly versatile in their composition, processing and applications. The transformation of bioactive glasses into nanometric-sized fibers, opens up an enormous range of possibilities for these materials. The extraordinary surface-volume ratio presented by nanofibers means that glass compositions that were not considered bioactive in bulk format, are considered bioactive in nanofiber format. This chapter makes a review on the synthesis and applications of nanofibers made out of bioactive glasses.
