The authors would like to point out a typo in one of the highlights of the original version of the published paper, to which we would like to apologise in advance. In the second highlight where it reads: “Microplastic concentrations in surface water were 4 times lower than in benthic sediments.” It should read: Microplastic concentrations in surface waters were almost 4000 times lower than in benthic sediments. No other changes to the original manuscript text, results or data are necessary. We apologise for any inconvenience that this typo might have caused.
