N2 - Sewage wastewaters represent a high health concern for developing and underdeveloped countries. In Brazil, illegal sewage disposal is represents serious direct and indirect consequences for public and wastewater professional’s health. The aim of this study is to contribute with a review on Brazilian legislation, norms and health risks for the public and professionals exposed to sewage wastewaters. The web-site of the World Health Organization, Google Scholar and PubMed were screened using keywords “sewage” and “wastewater”, while for screening Brazilian legislation and norms, the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Federative Republic of Brazil and Presidential Palace were screened using keywords “sewage system”, “environmental health” and “sewage/wastewater operators”. The identification process resulted with different microbial and chemical risks, 5 legislation and 2 norms. In order to resolve the health challenges posed by sewage there is a need for more organized structural wastewater solutions, treatment, rising public concern, and water sampling on and inspections on regular basis.
