Abstract
Nanomaterials are nanoscale-engineered particles that are measured on the nanoscale (1–100nm) and have unique physical and chemical properties. Because of their unique size and the chemical and physical properties, nanomaterials differ from their bulky counterpart and may act unpredictably. Nanomaterials can be classified as zero-dimension (0D), one-dimension (1D), two-dimensions (2D), and three-dimensions (3D) based on their size and dimensions. Engineered nanomaterials are manufactured materials having at least one dimension in the nanoscale range. Nanomaterials have received increased research focus in the recent years due to their plasmonic and physicochemical properties as well as their potential applications. Herein, in this chapter, nanomaterials, their classification, synthesis approaches, and characterization techniques are discussed in detail. Various types of nanomaterials are explained along with their properties and applications, and finally the toxicity, impact, chemistry, and recycling of nanomaterials are elaborated.
