    Abstract

    A refined approach for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) projects will help in the strive for rehabilitating Ireland's peatland habitats. After rehabilitation, peatlands can act as a major asset to reduce annual carbon emissions due to their carbon sink potential. Opportunities have been identified to reduce carbon emissions as part of TII’s peatland rehabilitation research project and will be published in technical guidance. Strategies to progress projects in ways that are sympathetic to degraded peatlands were assessed. Key elements include existing drainage infrastructure, flood risks and underlying hydrogeological conditions. Project earthworks are also highly influential, with solutions available to avoid excavating peat or create suitable deposition sites with arisings from degraded peatlands. These can rewet peatlands and promote long-term sphagnum growth.
