Abstract
A truly sustainable design for any product results from a design process that takes account of a complex mix of criteria and constraints. The sustainable requirements must be embedded in a normal customer-focused design process; otherwise the customer may not wish to buy the product. The purpose of the studies presented in this paper is to test a proposed sustainable design process for furniture and wood products small to medium enterprises (SME's) and to explore the potential for the implementation of sustainable design guidelines in the Irish furniture and wood products industry.
